Just a simple suggestion for this one - if you come across a scene like this again (or have a chance to reshoot this), try changing the metering mode of the camera. I think you are using a Canon A95 which should let you switch to spot or centre weighted metering. If you take a light reading from the white structure in the background for a photo the background will come out a bit darker and your centre of attention will stand out even more
